2019 Award Outline

Award Procedures

(1) The entrant companies present their business plans in the semi-final (November 1st) and final sessions.
(2) In the semi-finals, each of the entrants delivers a 10-minute presentation on their businesses. The top six goes to the final.
(3) At the final session, finalists make a 10-minute presentation. After a fair judgement, prize winners of each prize will be elected.


Judging criteria

(1) Possibility of collaboration with Japanese large corporations
(2) Innovativeness, commercial viability and social impact of the business, with consideration given to the potential of the business to expand and bring about changes in the global economy and society.
(3) Business performance, which includes the nominee’s competitive advantages, management team, strategic vision, and communication capabilities, including presentation skills.


Awards

-First Prize: 3 million JPY
-Second Prize: 1 million JPY
-Third Prize: 500,000 JPY

-Microsoft Award
Azure Sandbox Environment, Technical Mentoring
* Free sandbox environment will be closed in max. 3 months. The final date of the sandbox environment is 2020/5/31 even if the environment would have not been fully utilized.

-Life Science Award
1. One-year free membership of LINK-J (Life Science Innovation Network Japan)
2. Business support during the recipients’ business trip to Japan, including 1-1 meeting set-up, PR support, etc.
3. Invitation to Biocom Global Life Science Partnering Conference

-The Japan Academic Society for Ventures and Entrepreneurs(JASVE) Award: 50,000 JPY
…The award will be given by JASVE to the most challenging team in solving problems and which is full of entrepreneurship.

-IP Bridge Award
Award:Strategy building support for Intellectual property

-Audience Award
… This is awarded to the company receiving the most votes from the audience at the final session.


Qualification for Entry

Startup companies must meet all of the following requirements.
(1) Must have specific interest in Japanese market or desire in expanding business in relation with Japanese large corporations.
(2) Must be a technology startup focused in either fields of AI/ IoT or Medical/Healthcare.
(3) Must be an early stage startup which has completed PoC (Proof of Concept), and is able to communicate with a specific customer by using prototypes, samples or mockups.
– There are no conditions on the number of years of establishment or the amount of capital.
– A venture-backed company or a company with VCs involved is acceptable.
– Public companies or affiliates of large corporations are not accepted.
(4)Must be nominated by a person responsible for startup incubation/acceleration at a university, research institute, incubator or accelerator.
(5)Startup company must be able to participate in all the programs held between October 30th – November 1st, 2019.

Akiko Naka
CEO, Wantedly, Inc.

 Akiko Naka is founder and chief executive officer of Wantedly, a social-networking service for professionals. Following its official launch in February 2012, Wantedly grew to 2.5m monthly active users and 30,000 corporates, and has become the leading professional social-networking service in Japan. Prior to founding Wantedly, Ms Naka was a growth co-ordinator at Facebook Japan, where she contributed to marketing and product development for Facebook in Japan. Before joining Facebook, she worked at Goldman Sachs in equity sales. Ms Naka graduated from Kyoto University in 2008 with a BA in economics. Ms Naka was named as a 40 under 40 leaders by Harvard Business Review Japan. She is the youngest female founder ever to take a company public in Japan.
